 BOY AND DOLPHIN COIN PENDANTS

The coin replicates are actually pendants, with miniature shackles as their attachment. They are 99% silver, and a little smaller than a nickel (9/16 inch diameter), so makes a very nice medallion for men or women. There are two different coin replicates. Both have the boy and dolphin on one side. The other side varies: 1 is the horse and rider, which is the original coin. The 2nd has a great Octopus design from an ancient bronze coin. Each is $29.95 plus tax (6%) & shipping. They each come in a velvet bag with background of the coins as follows:

Calabria, Tarentum.            BOY & THE DOLPHIN            (silver didrachm replicate)

Taras, the son of Poseidon, was the legendary founder of Tarentum,a Spartan colony on the south coast of Italy, founded in 707 BC.  Tarentum was the first safe harbor for ships westbound from Greece, and grew into the leading city of Greek Italy.  The commercial success of Tarentum resulted in the production of millions of silver didrachms during the last two centuries before Rome destroyed Tarentum (c. 207 BC).

The original coin replicate shows Taras riding on the dolphin.   The other side is dedicated to the Tarentines' love of horses and shows a horse and rider.

Our second coin replicate has Taras riding on the dolphin on one side, and the reverse side of this coin is an Octopus motif from a bronze Sicilian coin, Syracuse, AR litra, 4760 BC.

The Legend: Taras was saved from a shipwreck with the aid of a dolphin sent to rescue him by his father, Poseidon, god of the sea.  Taras rode the friendly dolphin safely to shore, creating an enduring image in Classical art, and tales of a unique friendship between a boy and the dolphin.
